With any procedure or surgery, it is important to get all the information you can before diving in. If a dentist tells you that there is a 100% guarantee with a dental implant, that should be your first indication that you are not getting the information you need.

There will likely always be risks to any surgery, and they should advise you of those.

The good news is that dental implants have a very high success rate, so that's something you should feel good about. You should go over a list of pros and cons of your surgery with your dentist first. Knowing how long things will take to heal and what to expect will help you monitor and give feedback when needed. Here are some reasons things can go wrong and what will happen next.

What Happens Following Dental Implants That Do Not Heal Properly?

Before going ahead with a dental implant procedure, we will do an exam. We need to ensure that there is enough bone in your jaw bone to secure the implant. We will take measurements of the width and height, and make sure your jaw bone is sound enough to handle the implant.

In some cases, implants that do not heal properly are usually a result of there not being enough jaw bone to secure it. It can also be from too much inflammation or infection. Implants do take more than one visit.

Placing the post and the replacement tooth/teeth at the same time runs a higher risk of not healing properly. There are a couple of options that we can go over with you to help minimize this risk.

It is important to know that risks are greater for those people that smoke, have diabetes, have a low immune system, have thin gums, or have poor oral hygiene. We can address these with you during your visit.

You may not notice warning signs of implant failure right away after getting the implants. If caught at an early stage we may be able to treat you with cleaning the problem area and with antibiotics. In the event things go on longer the surgeon may need to open the area back up or place a bone graft.

On the plus side, the average success rate with dental implants is between 95% to 98% depending on the experience of the dentist and surgeon. This article is to inform you of what could happen, not to scare you away.

We want to remind you that good oral hygiene practices every day are important. Keeping up to date with office visits and letting us know of any changes to your overall health is also important. Our goal is to make sure you are healthy and happy.

We are not here to cause you pain or discomfort, but to stop pain and help you gain your confidence back. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns, since you may be preventing future problems.
