What Holds Dentures in Place?

Dentures Tuttle Crossing Dental Group OH 43017Complete dentures stay firmly in place because they are created specifically to fit the shape of the gums and bone ridges in the mouth. As time pass by, the muscles of the mouth naturally adjust to perfectly conform with the dentures, thereby resulting to a much better fit or attachment.

Partial dentures, on the other hand, are often kept in place by metal clasps that are attached to the remaining natural teeth. The clasps tend to securely hug the teeth and since natural teeth have roots, they are able to hold the partial dentures securely in place.

Using Dental Adhesives for Better Fit

Dental adhesives are often unnecessary, particularly if the dentures are well fitted. However, there are still many people who rely on dental adhesive considering that it makes them feel more secure that their dentures will stay in place and for a better fit as well.

Dentures tend to become loose after some time considering that the bone and supporting gum tissue naturally changes, especially after the removal of natural teeth. When this happens, using dental adhesive can help to alleviate the problem, albeit temporarily.

Dental adhesives can be in the form of pastes, pads, and powders. Regardless of the form, it is important that you read, understand, and follow the instructions on the label to the letter. Failure to do so can result in more serious problems than just loose dentures. For instance, if you are using a paste as a dental adhesive and you unknowingly put too much on the dentures, it can eventually lead to jaw problems or even ruin your dentures as well.

Without a doubt, loose and ill-fitting dentures are not only uncomfortable but can also significantly impact your daily life in a negative way. While dental adhesives can help provide relief, it does not address the root cause of the problem. At the end of the day, you need to pay us a visit so we can adjust or find the best solution to keep your dentures in place.
